Sigrid Stagl
Economist and professor of Environmental Economics and Policy at WU ViennaProf Dr Sigrid Stagl, born 4 December 1968 in Vienna, is an economist and university lecturer. She grew up on a farm in the Waldviertel. In 1999, after completing her studies in business and economics at Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), she became the first person in the world to receive a doctorate in ecological economics from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York.
She taught and researched at the University of Leeds from 2001 to 2005 and at the University of Sussex until 2009. In 2008, she returned to WU Vienna as a professor, where she founded the Institute for Ecological Economics in 2014, and headed it until 2019. Since 2020, she has been head of the Department of Socioeconomics at WU Vienna.
Her research focuses on ecological and economic modelling, the methodological development of participatory decision-making processes and empirical analyses of energy and food systems.
She is currently a member of the General Council of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank, the Austrian Federal Government Circular Economy Task Force, the Austrian Biodiversity Council, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Environment Agency .
She was elected “Scientist of the Year 2024” by the Club of Education and Science Journalists For her outstanding contributions of scientific knowledge to the public.
