Gabriel Felbermayr

Gabriel Felbermayr has been director of the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) in Vienna since 1 October 2021, and is a professor at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.

Gabriel Felbermayr was born in Steyr (Austria) in June 1976. After studying economics and trade at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, he went on to the European University Institute in Florence, where he earned his doctorate with a thesis on growth in open economies. From 2004 to 2005, he was an associate consultant at McKinsey & Co. in Vienna. From 2005 to 2008, he was academic advisor at the University of Tübingen, where he qualified as a university lecturer in economics. From 2009 to 2010, he held a chair in International Business at the University of Hohenheim (Stuttgart). From 2010 to 2019, he headed the ifo Centre for International Economics at the University of Munich, where he also served as a full professor of international economics. From 2019 to September 2021, he was president of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. At the same time, he held a chair in economics, particularly economic policy, at the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel.

Gabriel Felbermayr holds various roles and positions. The most important are: Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Federal Ministry for Economy and Climate Action, Chair of the Statistical Council of Statistics Austria, Founding President of the Austria Supply Chain Intelligence Institute (ASCII). His research and advisory work focuses on issues related to international trade theory and policy, labour market research, European economic integration and current economic policy issues. He has published numerous articles in international scientific journals, policy briefs and newspapers. His research has been recognised with various awards.
